Subway Loaves Are Too Sugary to Legally Be Called 'Bread,' Irish Court Rules

Ireland's Supreme Court made the ruling regarding a tax break the fast-food chain was seeking. According to the 'Irish Independent,' a five-judge panel found that the bread's sugar-to-flour ratio is nearly five times too high to qualify for a tax break for serving a "staple" food item. The chain's white bread wasn't the only option with too much sugar. The other five kinds offered —  , Italian herbs and cheese, nine-grain wheat, nine-grain multi-seed, honey oat and hearty Italian —, were all found to have similar amounts of sugar. According to Subway, a 6-inch white bread loaf has 5 grams of sugar, which is about the same as an Oreo cookie.
