Illinois Mandates Schools to Teach LGBTQ History

Starting in 2020, Illinois public schools will be legally required to teach LGBTQ history in their curriculum.  House Bill 246 informs that students must study “the roles and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in the history of this country and this State.” The bill also includes stipulations for African American history and other groups, including Polish, Irish, Italian, Hispanic and Asian American. Bill co-sponsor Sen. Heather Steans praised it as “one of the best ways to overcome intolerance.” Sen. Heather Steans, via Huffpost Sen. Heather Steans, via Huffpost
